London, February 2007.

Recently-qualified Fleetwood cadet Liam Thompson was honoured by the maritime industry’s Regulator, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) at a function here last night.

Hard-working Liam is the first person to win the MCA Officer Trainee of the Year, which was presented by Shipping Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman.

Liam is now a fully qualified Officer of the Watch, and is currently serving as a Third Officer with Zodiac Maritime Agencies Limited, who repatriated him in time to attend the glittering ceremony which was attended by luminaries of the maritime industry.

He was described as being “a true leader who encourages his peers to achieve their true potential”, and was the winning candidate from number of colleagues nominated by nautical colleges around the UK; the cream of the Merchant Navy.

He said “I am very glad that I stuck with the training – it has been really worthwhile and I would recommend it to anyone. I also wanted a career where I could come out of training without owing money, seeing different places and giving something back.”
