London, 13 July 2007.
Steven Peterson became the latest in a long line of successful Fleetwood cadets this month when he was chosen as Nautilus UK’s twelfth annual Bevis Minter Award winner.
The award, presented by the Trade Union for the officer trainee showing the greatest determination to succeed and positive attitude towards their career, was presented by Nautilus UK chairperson John Epsom.
Stephen was honoured by Mr Epson as being “an excellent example of what someone who has real drive and determination can achieve”. Stephen is now sailing as a Second Officer with Farstad Marine Limited, having recently achieved his Officer of the Watch qualification.
Staff at Fleetwood said that he stood out from the group of other candidates because he had “worked consistently well and put in the extra 110% effort throughout his course of study”. He started his career at sea as a deck rating but his potential to lead was soon noticed by his officers and company, who recommended him for further training.
Stephen has had to overcome the disadvantage of having left school without a good maths mark, but persevered and achieved through stubbornness and sheer hard work. “I am very glad to have been able to come to Fleetwood”, he said. “I am very glad for all the help from all the staff over the past two years, especially the Two Jonathans.”, he laughed.
