For the second time in the three year history of the Award, a Fleetwood cadet has scooped the prize for MCA Trainee Officer of the Year.

Recently qualified cadet Thomas Barkley was honoured by the maritime industry regulator, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), at the annual reception in London last month.

The award, presented by the Shipping Minister Jim Fitzpatrick MP, recognises excellence of attitude and commitment displayed by officer cadets during training.

Tom completed his training with Ship Safe Training Group Ltd (SSTG) and was sponsored by, and is currently employed by J. H. Whitaker (Tankers) Ltd.

Head of Campus, John Matthews, said "I offer my sincere congratulations to Tom and wish him all the best in his future career".

Lucy Stevens, Training Co-ordinator for SSTG commented "I am very proud of Tom, he has worked hard and deserves the recognition he has been given.  He is well thought of amongst his peers, college staff and shipboard colleagues.  He is a team player, conscientious and always provides a positive influence."
