Welcome to Fleetwood Nautical Campus which is part of Blackpool and The Fylde College. Fleetwood campus is recognised as one of the top Nautical establishments in the country with a wide range of UK and overseas students. The college has been designated as a National Beacon of Excellence and was recently re-accredited for the Charter Mark in recognition of the excellent service it provides to all its learners.

Both Maritime Studies and Offshore are accredited to ISO 9000:2000. Courses are run to the highest standard with an impressive number of state of the art resources which include a Transas full mission ship simulator with five bridges, a fire ground approved by the MCA and OPITO, seamanship centre and launching platform open to the sea, environmental tank and helicopter underwater escape trainer, Fleetwood Nautical Campus has a world wide reputation for its excellence.

The Campus is built on a green field site and offers the perfect place to study and achieve. We are easily reached by rail, road or air. Blackpool has an international airport and we are only 1.5 hours from Manchester Ringway Airport. 100 single berth cabins are provided on site and a good range of accommodation is available locally.

The Fleewood Campus is renowned for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The food in the refectory is to the highest standard and most importantly our students regularly achieve well above the national bench mark. About the College

Blackpool and The Fylde College is a large Further Education institution in the North West of England. Spread over four main sites along the Fylde Coast it enrols over 25,000 students each year (4,500 Full-Time equivalents). On the Nautical Campus at Fleetwood, Blackpool and The Fylde College is a major provider of Merchant Navy Deck Training which ranges from Rating to Master.

The School of Maritime Operations is approved by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the Edexcel Foundation (BTEC) and the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) to deliver Courses leading to Deck Officer Certificates of Competency and other qualifications in the Merchant Navy.

The programmes include Cadet and Deck Rating Training Programmes to Master Mariner, STCW95 Short Courses, National Vocational Qualifications in Merchant Vessel Operations, an HND in Nautical Science and the first year of a BSc (Hons) in Maritime Studies.


The Campus

The Nautical Campus is situated in extensive grounds on the outskirts of Fleetwood. We are well placed for road and rail access. It is easily reached by road (M6, M55, A585), by rail (Blackpool North) and Manchester Airport is 1 1/2 hours away.

The main building houses the classrooms, including the 5-Bridge Full Mission Ship Simulator, Computer Suites, Electronic Labs for GMDSS and Navigational Instruments. We have an up-to-date Learning Resource Centre specialising in Maritime publications. Students use the latest computers for word-processing, other software packages and access to the Internet. CD-ROM is available for study and research.

Our state-of-the-art Environmental Survival Training Tank is also situated on the campus. The Student Common Room, Refectory and Administrative Offices are on the ground floor, while next door are the Halls of Residence.

Off-site we have facilities in Fleetwood at the marine lake for Boatwork & Seamanship, and survival exercises using a Training Platform on the River Wyre.

The Fire Fighting Training takes place at our purpose-built Fire Ground located at Burn Naze/Thornton.

In this age of inner city congestion our spacious campus and plentiful parking are tangible benefits. For those who wish to live off the campus there is plenty of local accommodation to rent at realistic prices.

The main campus of Blackpool and The Fylde College is at Bispham, which is approximately three miles from the Fleetwood campus.


Full Mission Ship Simulator

The College has a Full Mission Simulator comprising of five bridges, and is one of the most modern in the world.

The database consists of approximately forty geographical areas accurately modelled and approximately 36 ship models that have been hydrodynamically modelled and verified as being accurate.

A range of courses are run at regular intervals, these being the NARAS(O), NARAS(M), Bridge Team Management, ECDIS, and ship handling courses.

In addition to the regular courses the Simulator is suitable for use in Bridge Resource Management Training, Pilot Training, Research and Development Projects and Accident Investigation.

The flexibility of the Simulator configuration ensures that specialist projects or courses can be designed quickly and economically to the exact requirements of the client. New areas and models may be built to the client specifications at competitive prices.

The College will be pleased to assist in the design of courses and programmes tailor-made to individual organisations. 


Survival Training

The Nautical Campus is also home to the Fleetwood Offshore Survival Centre, (FOSC). FOSC is one of the leading centres of Offshore Survival Training in the United Kingdom. It provides training for both the offshore oil and gas industries and Merchant Navy personnel. Courses offered include Survival, Fast Rescue Craft (Coxn and Boatman) and Firefighting Training approved by the MCA, the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation and the Norwegian equivalent, the Oljeindustriens Lansforening (OLF).

The Maritime Operations Section utilises these courses where appropriate. The Offshore Centre, through our in-house Fleetwood Testing Laboratory (FTL), also provides a testing service for Personal Protection and Survival Equipment approved by UKAS, MCA, Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Defence. FTL is a Notified Body and tests to European Test Centre (CEN) standards.

College Staff

The majority of the Lecturers on the Maritime Programmes are qualified as Master Mariner or have appropriate professional qualifications. In addition, Lecturers hold qualifications such as Degrees, Management Qualifications and Teaching Certificates. Lecturing staff hold, or are working towards Assessor Awards.

The Administrative, Domestic and other Support Staff are keen to provide you with a service which will ensure a smooth and efficient stay at College.

The College is keen to promote Staff Development and we encourage in-house and external training. Staff Appraisal is used to identify target areas for development.

The Offshore unit is accredited to ISO 9000. Maritime Operations is accredited to ISO 9001:2000. The college achieved accreditation as an Investor in People in 1998.
